What to do when someone says they are struggling
The first response does not need to solve everything. It needs to make the next conversation possible.
Slow the conversation down. Give the person your attention, listen to what they are actually saying and resist the urge to jump straight to a solution.
A manager is not there to diagnose. The useful role is to respond with care, understand what support may be needed at work and signpost professional help when appropriate.
Teams can practise this. Clear listening and response techniques make a difficult moment feel less improvised for everyone involved.
